TEDxHouston 2011 - Wade Adams - Nanotechnology and Energy
Dr. Wade Adams is the Director of the Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology at Rice University. The Institute is devoted to the development of new innovations on the nanometer scale. Some of the institute's current thrusts include research in carbon nanotubes, medical applications of nanoparticles, nanoporous membranes, molecular computing, and nanoshell diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Wade was appointed a senior scientist (ST) in the Materials Directorate of the Wright Laboratory in 1995. Prior to that he was a research leader and in-house research scientist in the directorate. For the past 36 years he has conducted research in polymer physics, concentrating on structure-property relations in high-performance organic materials. He is internationally known for his research in high-performance rigid-rod polymer fibers, X-ray scattering studies of fibers and liquid crystalline films, polymer dispersed liquid crystals, and theoretical studies of ultimate polymer properties.

Michio Kaku: Can Nanotechnology Create Utopia?
Dr. Kaku addresses the question of the possibility of utopia, the perfect society that people have tried to create throughout history. These dreams have not been realized because we have scarcity. However, now we have nanotechnology, and with nanotechnology, perhaps, says Dr. Michio Kaku, maybe in 100 years, we'll have something called the replicator, which will create enormous abundance. Transcript-- Throughout human history people have tried to create utopia, the perfect society. In fact, America, the American dream, in some sense was based on utopianism. Why do we have the Shaker movement? Why did we have the Quakers? Why did we have so many different kinds of religious movements that fled Europe looking to create autopia here in the Americas? Well, we know the Shakers have disappeared and many of these colonies have also disappeared only to be found in footnotes in American textbooks, and the question is why? One reason why is scarcity because back then the industrial revolution was still young and societies had scarcity. Scarcity creates conflict and unless you have a way to resolve conflict, your colony falls apart. How do you allocate resources? Who gets access to food when there is a famine? Who gets shelter when there is a snowstorm and all of the sudden you've eaten up your seed corn? These are questions that faced the early American colonists, and that's the reason why we only see the ghost towns of these utopias. However, now we have nanotechnology, and with ...

Ross Nanotechnology's NeverWet superhydrophobic spray-on coating
Ross Technology Corp. needed a better way to reduce corrosion on the steel products. When they couldn't find a suitable one, they worked on creating something on their own. And eventually they hit upon a slick product that's led to a whole new business. That product is NeverWet, a silicon-based spray-on coating that repels water and heavy oils. GOLDEN AGE - SOMEWHERE
OFFICIAL SELECTION: Vimeo Awards 2012 (experimental category last 4), Soho shorts, Onedotzero, Alphaville.
Within 'Somewhere' We are transported to a time where the boundaries between what is real and what is simulated are blurred. We live online and download places to relax, parks and shopping malls. We can even interact with our friends as if they were in the same room with simulated tele-presence. Everyone is connected and immersed in nanorobotic replications of any kind of object or furnishings, downlodable on credit based systems. Distance and time become as alien as the 'offline' The local becomes the global and the global becomes the local. Consumer based capitalism has changed forever. A truly 'glocolised' world. The singularity is near.
The film places us into this vision, observing an average inhabitant within the ever changing environment of the latest SimuHouse. From a painting to a park and from a telephone call to a shopping mall. That is until there is a leek in the system and everything malfunctions. The film concludes with the house being forced to reset, giving the character and viewer a stark reminder that nothing is 'real' even her dog, which re-materialises in front of her.

Метаматериа́л — материал, природные свойства которого обусловлены не столько природными физическими свойствами, сколько периодической микроструктурой создаваемой человеком.

TURNING INTO GODS - 'Concept Teaser'
"First we build the tools, then they build us"
- Marshall McLuhan
TURNING INTO GODS is a new feature length documentary exploring mankind's journey to 'play jazz with the universe'... it is a story of our ultimate potential, the reach of our intelligence, the scope of our scientific and engineering abilities and the transcendent quality of our heroic and noble calling.
Thinking, feeling, striving, man is what Pierre Teilhard de Chardin called "the ascending arrow of the great biological synthesis."... today we walk a tight-rope between ape and Nietzsche's Overman... how will we make it through, and what is the texture and color of our next refined and designed evolutionary leap?
"Design is becoming immanent to being," says the website Next Nature.. Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence will allow us to become what philosopher David Pearce calls: 'Paradise Engineers'
Tomorrow, collaboration between biologists, electrical engineers and designers, a hitherto inconceivable proposition, will be something we take for granted.
Featuring interviews with the world's most interesting minds, these luminaries will paint for us a picture of the world beyond the looking glass. The world we are creating.
"We are as gods," says Stewart Brand, "and we might as well get good at it."

What is nanotechnology? How is it used in iPods (or electronics in general)? Song: Viva la Vida by Coldplay I do not own this song, this is for educational purposes only. I just thought it would be nice to have one of those songs that everyone uses as background even though it never has to do anything with the subject.
